Disclaimer: I am not responsible for any problems these instruction may cause you. AT&T “may” be able to charge you tethering so extra charges are not my fault same as if they drop your contract. Use at your own risk
I have been searching for a way to get Tethering (at the very least) to work with AT&T service. I did find the carrier update to enable tethering however it broke my visual voicemail. After searching I have found the files to allow MMS, Tethering, and maintain Visual Voicemail. I will uploa the files for the carrier file, and the Windows iTunes 8.2 pre-release.
You will need:
- iPhone w/ 3.0 on AT&T in USA
- Carrier Settings File
- iTunes 8.2 Pre-Release
Steps to Install:
- Uninstall iTunes. Reinstall the version I gave you. If you get the “itunes library.itl” error browse to your Music/iTunes folder and replace an older date .itl file.
- Once iTunes is reinstalled, plug your iPhone in.
- When your phone comes up in iTunes, you need to shift+click “Check for Updates” (option+click for mac?)
- Browse to the .ipcc file (Carrier Settings) and install.
- Reboot iPhone and enjoy MMS, Tethering (from the Setting>General>Network), and Voicemail!
Take that AT&T
I don’t know how bad the downloads will be, as I have never used my server for downloading files, please be patient and enjoy.

i was wondering if i would lose all the music that i have if i uninstall itunes. if i would then what steps can i take in order to keep all the music?
No you won’t lose all your music. iTunes doesn’t actually store any music within it own folders. All of your music should be stored in your user/music directory. The .itl file is how iTunes knows how to find your music which is why you have to restore to an older itl if you have updated to iTunes 8.2. So no uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes won’t affect anything.
Hey, this work for me. At least I have cellular date under network. Thanks. But mms does not work though and visual voicemail doesn’t work anymore. I found a solution after searching around. To get vvm to work, you have to replace the APN to acds.voicemail. The rest is blank. I’m trying to ges to work, no luck yet. Hope this help you guys.
Are you using iPhone firmware 3.0? Are you on the AT&T network? This carrier file is only for AT&T. Tell me how everything works out for you.
Yes. I’m on AT&T. Everything works for me except MMS. It fail to send. I was reading somewhere that that have to do with AT&T block. I’ll wait it out. As for tethering, it work like a charm. Visual Voice Mail does not work after this update though. I have to change the APN for Voice Mail. I have to change I to acds.voicemail. Anothing that I figure out is that if you do a Network Reset, this will basically give you all the default APN, Pass, User, etc.
This is awsome, thanks for the tut.
That’s weird I tried a different file before this one and vvm is all that broke. With this file everything worked right away make sure you have good service because the MMS take awhile to send.
you are the man 2 weeks without out visual voice mail searched internet for a fix nothing came across your post installed your file and everything works great
thanks one thing used itunes version 9.0 with no problems
Yeah this post was from a few months ago. I think with iTunes 9.0 they went back to being able to patch ipcc files.
